Why you should give the modern mullet a chance

There’s really no delicate way to put it, so we’re just going to say it: Mullets are back in all their glory and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon!

The mullet is probably one of the most divisive hairstyles of 2020. The masses cringe when they hear the mullet has returned -- immediately recalling the early 90s Billy Ray Cyrus “achey breaky heart” look or the fabled Joe Dirt mullet-and-sideburns combo.

The truth is, modern mullets have been revisioned, revamped and are now some of the trendiest and most versatile cuts this year (and will be into next year, too).  Instead of the traditional “party in the back” with a short fringe and short sides, we’re using precision cutting techniques to bring a new look to the mullet.

The modern mullet is less dramatic, more low-key, and increasingly more wearable.

Robert Watkins, master barber and owner of The Mailroom Barber Co, says the modern mullet is versatile and can work with a ton of different styles.

“There are so many ways you can wear a mullet,” says Watkins. “But the main characteristic is the length in the back. Once you have that, we can go lots of directions. My personal favorite is a mullet with a layered, square shape. We pull from the 80’s version that leaves a bit more length on the sides so you get a ton of flow and texture. We’re not against shaving the sides and leaving a Mississippi mud flap, and we commonly do it to give clients the ‘If you’re not first, you’re last’ look, but the longer version is most flattering in my opinion.”

If you’re curious about getting a mullet but you’re not quite ready to commit you can always go for a looser shag style that’s gaining popularity quickly in the US. Shags are best with longer hair, but the main characteristics are shattered, face framing bangs, and a lot of layers and texture. Needless to say, this haircut can be pretty metal. It can also be dressed up with the right styling but if you get a shag, be ready for the edginess that comes with it.

Shags are a big throwback to the 70’s and they’re sort of kissing-cousins with the mullet. Either way, you’re getting length in the back with a ton of shattered layers.

To the modern mullet, we say “yes.” Or as our good friend Joe Dirt would say: “You can’t have ‘no’ in your heart, brother.”

Give the modern mullet a chance and see the truth!
